Join us on Tuesday, January 19, 2021, for a conversation on Maryland’s public transportation presented by the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) on the process of developing a Statewide Transit Plan (STP) to define public transportation goals and strategies for Maryland’s rural, suburban, and urban regions. The Plan will create a 50-year vision toward increasingly coordinated, equitable, and innovative mobility with a dignified customer experience. The project team will be hosted by the Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to discuss the plan with members and partner organizations.

January 21st  @ 09:00 AM - 12:00P PM Small Business Enterprise (SBE) Application Assistance Workshop and Project Information Session

The SBE Program is a race and gender neutral program which provides PRIME contracting opportunities to small businesses on federally-aided projects with MDOT State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA), MDOT Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA), and MDOT Maryland Aviation Administration (MDOT MAA). Only SBE certified firms can bid on these projects. MDOT’s Office of Small and Minority Business Policy (OSMBP) is hosting two FREE SBE Application Assistance Workshops on January 21st and July 21st from 9am-12pm at MDOT Headquarters, located at 7201 Corporate Center Drive Hanover, MD 21076.

These workshops explain program eligibility standards, benefits of certification, and the application process. You will also hear directly from agency personnel about upcoming SBE -designated contracts. You will also be able to meet with certification officers one-on-one to ask questions that relate specifically to your business. Space is limited. Re

Digital transformation is a must for all firms going forward as the internet becomes the new marketplace for companies big and small. Join us for a conversation between government, poblic policy experts, and infrastructure experts on how 5G will transform business practices, facilitate payments, speed up logistics, and increase the demand for services.

Our Presenters:

Marco V. Ávila, P.E. is the Chairman of the Board & President of the Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (MDHCC). He took over MDHCC in February 2019 and his term will be three (3) years. With the help of the new leadership at the Chamber, Marco has big plans for the Chamber including bringing the membership from 274 members to 1,000 members by the end of his term. The new programs that he is planning to implement and offer to the members of the MDHCC are: Mentoring, Educations, Growth, Partnership, Promotion/Marketing, Procurement Advisory, Networking. In addition, Marco and his team created the Maryland Hispanic Chamber Foundation (MDHCF). The Foundation will provide scholarships for high school students. Organization will have the opportunity to team up with the MDHCC to provide these scholarships. Furthermore, Marco plans to bring more businesses to Maryland from all over Latin America through the Sister States Program.  Marco is a Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of Maryland and Virginia. He has been practicing his Civil Engineering Profession for over 35 years (22 Years with WSP/Parsons Brinckerhoff). He has experience providing engineering and program/project management services for major infrastructure projects in the public and private sector, including transit, highways, bridges, Public-Private Partnership (P3) and telecommunications. He has a consistent track record of cost-effective project delivery under demanding circumstances. Marco is fluent in Spanish and speaks Portuguese.     

Mario Acosta-Velez, Director of State Government Affairs / External Affairs at Verizon East Region. He manages relations with customers, employees, government, community partners, business organizations, and stakeholders with a focus on building alliances to promote public policies that are consistent with Verizon’s goals and objectives. In this capacity, Mario is responsible for leading external affairs, regional philanthropy / corporate social responsibility initiatives, community engagement, diversity and inclusion, and external strategic partnerships. Mario leads stakeholder engagement and technology education initiatives to enhance consumers’ knowledge of the benefits of advanced technologies such as smart cities, small cells and 5G, and works with Verizon’s 5G labs teams to advance 5G focused initiatives and the benefits for consumers and businesses.

Jaime Paniagua, President/CEO of Paniagua’s Enterprises, Inc.: a full-service communications construction company with headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland and a regional office in Atlanta, Georgia. PEI has served clients large and small, including projects all over the state of Maryland and Georgia. He is recognized as being one of the subject matter experts in the communications construction arena. He brings more than twenty-three years of experience in the telecommunications field.

Ana Rua, Public Affairs Manager at Crown Castle, driven by telecommunications’ ability to empower communities, Ana Rua leads New York Government Affairs City & State strategy at the nation’s largest provider of shared wireless infrastructure, Crown Castle. An immigrant from Colombia, Rua has spent her career in New York paying it forward on the American Dream by working with the intention of social responsibility at public and private institutions. Prior to her role at Crown Castle, Rua was part of the team that spearheaded Governor Andrew Cuomo’s $500M initiative to connect the most rural and remote regions of New York State with high-speed internet access, traveling to 56 of the state’s 62 counties to facilitate the program’s implementation. Also, at Governor Cuomo’s office, she inherited a $70 million portfolio of legacy projects in dire need of management and by coordinating with utilities, establishing availability of services and ensuring minority and women-owned businesses got seat at the table, the projects are now on track and on-budget.
